SPOTLIGHT ON: SIMONE BROWN (THE LINDY CLUB)
This month we chat to the fabulous Simone Brown from Hampshire based dance school The Lindy Club. Not only does she (and partner Bic Graham) teach lessons across Hampshire, the UK and France, she has been a long time member of Jenny Thomas' Sophiscated Ladies, heads up her own troupe The Lindy Club Muskrats and has won numerous lindy hop titles at The London Swing Festival, DJAM, Rockbottoms Liverpool and The Provence Swing Festival.
YEARS DANCING: 30 years ... starting with classical ballet, tap and modern for 18 years. In my early 20s I started SwingJive for a few years and for the past 7 and a half years it's been all about the lindy hop!
CITY OF RESIDENCE: Fareham, Hampshire
DANCES SPECIALISE IN: Lindy hop, charleston and jazz
I GOT INTO SWING DANCE VIA...: SwingJive. I began partner dancing with The Swing Dance Company for a bit of fun with my friend a she had seen an advert in the paper. I was a demonstrator for a while too until we went off travelling. When I came back I frequented the odd social dance and it was here that I met Bic and my lindy journey began.
BIGGEST DANCING INSPIRATIONS: Bic & I were lucky enough to encounter Ryan [Francois] & Jenny [Thomas] a few months into our learning which was incredible. They are truly amazing dancers and teachers and we took as many classes with them as we could.
FAVOURITE DANCING SHOES: I found some tango practice shoes which I love as they look a little vintage and are really comfortable and go with everything!
FAVOURITE DANCING OUTFIT: A very floral dress I recently found online!
DANCING GOALS FOR 2016: More solo jazz practice! To enter the showcase divisions at the ESDC comps with Bic and also our troupe, the Lindy Club Muskrats.
ONE PIECE OF ADVICE I'D GIVE ASPIRING SWING DANCERS: Go to as many camps and classes as you can in as many different places as you can get to.
IF I COULD INSTANTANEOUSLY BE GOOD AT A COMPLETELY UNRELATED TYPE OF DANCE IT WOULD BE: Tango
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOCAL SCENE AND THE LINDY CLUB: We run The Lindy Club which consists of 3 weekly classes, 4 weekend camps and as many workshops and social dances that we can fit in when we are not away teaching.
We started teaching in Chandlers Ford 5 years ago and the scene has gradually built up over the years and is now thriving with lots of dancers of all ages and from all walks of life. Growing the local scene is a real passion for us.
